Size, not temperature, drives cyclopoid copepod predation of invasive mosquito larvae

چکیده

During range expansion, invasive species can experience new thermal regimes. Differences between the performance of local and alter interactions, including predator-prey interactions. The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus , is a known vector several viral diseases public health importance. It has successfully invaded many regions across globe currently threatens to invade UK where conditions would support seasonal activity. We assessed functional response predation efficiency (percentage prey consumed) cyclopoid copepods Macrocyclops albidus Megacyclops viridis from South East England, against newly-hatched French Ae . larvae relevant temperature (15, 20, 25°C). Predator-absent controls were included in all experiments account for background mortality. found that both M display type II curves, therefore be suitable biocontrol agents event an invasion UK. No significant effect on interaction was detected by either analysis. However, analysis did show differences due predator species. results suggest superior larger size this copepod species, relative Our work highlights importance relationships predicting interactions invading predators.

Copepod predation on Anopheles quadrimaculatus larvae in rice fields.

Cyclopoid copepods and mosquito larvae were surveyed in southwestern Louisiana rice fields. Almost every rice field had a natural population of Mesocyclops ruttneri, Acanthocylops vernalis, or Macrocyclops albidus. Judging from the abundance of pupae, 29% of the fields were responsible for virtually all Anopheles quadrimaculatus production, apparently because larval mortality suppressed product...

Size-specific predation on marine invertebrate larvae.

Predation on planktonic larval stages is frequently a major source of mortality for the offspring of benthic marine invertebrates. Mortality rate likely varies with larval size and developmental stage, but few experiments have measured how these factors affect predation rates. I used experimental reductions in egg size to test how variation in larval size affects the likelihood of predation dur...

The Sarcoplasmic Reticulum of Striated Muscle of a Cyclopoid Copepod

The fine structure of the abdominal musculature of the copepod Macrocyclops albidus was investigated by electron microscopy. Tubules penetrate into the muscle fibers from the sarcolemma, continuity between the wall of the tubules and the sarcolemma being clear. A dense network of tubules envelops the myofibrils, its interstices being occupied by cisternal elements. At the Z lines the tubules tr...

Compatibility of cyclopoid copepods with mosquito insecticides.

Larvivorous copepods (Macrocyclops, Mesocyclops and Acanthocyclops) were tested for their sensitivities to commonly used mosquito larvicides and adulticides. The cyclopoids were not harmed by Bacillus thuringiensis (H-14) (B.t.i.) or larviciding oil. Control of mosquito larvae in field trials was accelerated by applying B.t.i. at the same time cyclopoids were introduced to a breeding site. Amon...

Predation effects of the calanoid copepod

This study investigated feeding rates and selective feeding of the common copepod Acartia tonsa on mixtures of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Protoperidinium cf. divergens and the cooccurring red-tide dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra and predation effects of A. tonsa on the population growth of P cf. divergens during simulated red-tide and non-red-tide periods. Ingestion and clearance rates ...
